The Center for Integrative Medicine’s new Hyperbaric Treatment Center offers an exciting new modality to help many people with various chronic disorders. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing air in a chamber that is both increased in pressure and in concentration of oxygen. HBOT shows great promise for helping people who previously may not have had a lot of hope. People with conditions such as:

· Autism and Autistic Spectrum Disorders

· Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

· Fibromyalgia

· Post Closed Head Injury

· Post Stroke

· Post Operative Recovery and Post Plastic Surgery

The Hyperbaric Treatment Center is a part of the Center for Integrative Medicine in Concord, NH. We are affiliated with Concord Hospital. Unlike many other HBOT centers, our facility is overseen by MD’s who have undergone training and certification from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Association (UHMA). We are staffed by a technician who has also received training through the UHMA.

What to expect during a Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment:

Our chamber is a “soft shell” chamber that you climb into. The technician will then close the opening and then start the pressurization process. During this time you will hear a blowing noise in the chamber. As the pressure increases, you may feel some “ear squeeze.” This is like the ear pressure you feel during an airplane descent. This can be treated by swallowing or yawning.

Our chamber is different from most soft shell chambers in that it is equipped to go to a higher pressure than other soft shell chambers (1.5 times atmospheric pressure rather than 1.3times). We also have the capacity to deliver concentrated oxygen at 95% rather than compressed room air of 21% like most other soft chambers. This requires that you wear a face mask that delivers the oxygen. Some people take a while to get used to this face mask but others do not mind it at all.

This means that the typical “soft shell” chamber will increase the pressure of oxygen in your tissues by 30%. However, ours will increase the pressure of oxygen by 677%!!!

Most people read or simply relax while in the chamber. If you are going into the chamber with a young child, you may bring in a book or non-electronic toys to play with during the session.
